Damage Control Mode
A disastrous first day in Round 2, with the planned moves proving to be nothing less than a date with disaster.

Yesterday I wrote that I expected a tough night for Rathan-Mayes and Lucic at OAKA, so I would grab them later at a better price. In the end, the plan happened... but in reverse. Lucic at OAKA, with just 3 points, put up a respectable 11 and, more importantly, Rathan-Mayes had a captain-level performance with 26 PIR. But yesterday, Lucic managed just 10 points for a 2 PIR, while his teammate did everything wrong and finished with -2! These two moves essentially determine the team’s performance in Round 2, and now we’re just waiting for today’s games to see if we can salvage something.

From the other moves, the tireless Milutinov fought alone against Real Madrid’s upgraded frontline, playing 28 minutes and reaching 17 ranking. Vezenkov once again missed a lot of shots, and the fact that he still finished with 16 PIR was almost a relief. Milutinov is left to handle the 5 spot on his own this season, since the acquisition of Hall is just another link in the chain of Sikma, Lee, Vildoza, Mensah, Quincy Acy, etc. That’s exactly why we considered from the start that having him on our roster was non-negotiable.

Back to fantasy matters: as expected, Rathan-Mayes and Lucic are automatically sent to the bench. Milutinov, of course, stays in the starting six, and so does Vezenkov. The team will go into Turn 2 with a 2-1-2 system, with the players who did well in Round 1 (Moses Wright, Hall, Forrest, Osmani) coming in to rescue us with points and minimize the damage.

One decision that had to be made was whether Vezenkov would keep the captaincy with his 16 PIR. The lack of any player in Turn 2 that you could be confident about for a strong score (e.g. Nunn), and the tough matchup awaiting the otherwise impressive Moses Wright against the reigning champions, lead me to keep Vezenkov as captain. These are the kind of days in Fantasy when taking a risk — something that in other cases might be necessary — could prove catastrophic and leave you with a score that weighs you down for the entire season.
